Natuna Regent Cen Sui Lan has called on local fishermen to make better use of weather and marine information to stay safe at sea and improve their fishing activities. She made the call while officially opening the 2026 Fishermen Weather Field School (SLCN) at the Natuna Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) office on Tuesday (September 22).
As an island region where the sea is both a way of life and a source of income for many families, Natuna faces the everyday challenges of changing weather, waves, tides, and other marine conditions. Cen said having a better understanding of these factors can help fishermen make safer and more informed decisions before and during their trips.
She encouraged the 35 participating fishermen to take full advantage of the training, particularly by discussing and learning how to interpret BMKG’s weather and marine information. Beyond improving fishing activities, she said the knowledge could strengthen fishermen’s preparedness, capacity, and safety while working at sea.
The program, organized with support from BMKG, carries the theme “With SLCN, Skilled, Safe and Prosperous Fishermen.” Maritime Meteorology Station Head Rafael Alessandro Marbun said the training is designed to expand fishermen’s access to marine weather information and help them use it effectively in support of the fisheries sector.
The participants came from Ranai Kota, Ranai Darat, Bandarsyah, Batu Hitam, Batu Gajah, Sungai Ulu, and Sepempang. The opening was also attended by Natuna Regional Secretary, members of the regional coordination forum, BMKG officials, the Natuna Fisheries Agency, and other participants. (Pro_Kopim Natuna/D)
