Natuna Regent Cen Sui Lan has called on all relevant parties to strengthen efforts to prevent forest and land fires (Karhutla), especially during the dry season.
The issue was discussed during a coordination meeting on preparedness for potential drought and forest and land fires in Natuna Regency. The meeting was held at the Natuna Regent’s Office in Bukit Arai, Ranai, on Monday morning, 24 August.
Cen Sui Lan said that the hot and dry weather could increase the risk of forest and land fires. The risk could become even higher when land is cleared by burning.
“Everyone has a role in preventing forest and land fires. We need to work together and take early action before a small fire becomes a bigger problem,” she said.
The meeting was attended by members of the Regional Leadership Coordination Forum (FKPD), Deputy Speaker of the Natuna Regency DPRD Daeng Ganda Rahmatullah and several council members, the Regional Secretary, heads of relevant government agencies, and sub-district heads.
The Regent hoped the meeting would strengthen coordination between government agencies and other stakeholders. She also encouraged participants to share ideas and find practical solutions to prevent and respond to forest and land fires.
As part of the early response, the Natuna Health Office has also taken steps to deal with the current unhealthy air quality. Masks have been distributed, while health workers have been prepared at community health centers (Puskesmas) across Natuna.
The local government is also preparing a Circular Letter for the public on how to report land fires. People who provide information about fires will be given a reward, while those who intentionally burn land will face clear warnings and sanctions.
Cen Sui Lan also reminded businesses operating in Natuna that they must have proper facilities and equipment to help prevent and respond to forest and land fires.
The Natuna Regency Government will also coordinate with the River Basin Agency (BWS) to support the provision of drilled wells in Cemaga and Binjai. The measure is part of the government’s efforts to improve preparedness in the two areas, which are considered to have a higher risk of forest and land fires. (Pro_kopimnatuna/D)
