Natuna Deputy Regent Jarmin welcomed a delegation from the Australian Embassy at his office in Bukit Arai, Natuna, on Friday morning (October 9), to discuss opportunities for cooperation in regional development, particularly in the maritime and fisheries sectors.
During the meeting, Jarmin highlighted Natuna’s strategic position as a border region and the potential it holds for further development. He expressed hope that the visit would pave the way for meaningful collaboration between Natuna and Australia.
As an archipelago, Natuna faces distinct challenges in delivering development across its territory, particularly in improving transportation links and connectivity between islands. Closer cooperation, Jarmin noted, could help support efforts to address these challenges and advance development in the region.
Ryan Cunningham, First Secretary (Political) at the Australian Embassy, said the visit was an opportunity to gain a firsthand understanding of Natuna’s development priorities, including the opportunities and challenges affecting local maritime communities.
He explained that Australia sees potential for working with the Natuna Regency Government to support local development and address issues facing the maritime sector.
Discussions also explored possible support for civil society organizations working in maritime-related fields, sustainable financing, and efforts to improve safety at sea.
Through the visit, the Australian delegation aimed to gain a clearer picture of the local government’s needs and challenges, while identifying opportunities for future programs that could deliver tangible benefits to Natuna’s maritime communities.
The meeting was also attended by the Natuna Regional Secretary and representatives of relevant regional government agencies. (Pro-Kopim/D)
