Natuna Regent Pushes Stronger Local Role in East Natuna Oil and Gas Exploration Plans

Jakarta, September 8, 2025 — The Natuna Regency Government and Pertamina East Natuna (PEN) held an audience meeting in Jakarta to discuss the upcoming oil and gas exploration drilling scheduled for 2026, highlighting opportunities to strengthen local participation in operations.

Natuna Regent Cen Sui Lan urged greater involvement of regional resources in supporting PEN’s exploration activities in the East Natuna Block, emphasizing the importance of local goods and services, workforce participation, and logistics facilities.

During the meeting, PEN President Director Rachmat confirmed that the company has secured approval and budget for drilling one exploration well, with operations targeted to begin on June 19, 2026. Preparations for procurement of goods and services are already underway.

Rachmat noted that Natuna Besar Island, with its port and airport infrastructure, is well-positioned to serve as the operational hub, providing key services such as vessel refueling, aviation, catering, fresh water, crew changes, accommodation, labor, and a logistic shorebase.

Regent Cen Sui Lan stressed that the local government will compile a list of regional goods and services to meet PEN’s operational needs, ensuring local businesses and workers gain direct benefit. She also called for continued dialogue between PEN, SKK Migas, and the Natuna government to maximize local engagement in oil and gas activities.

In the long term, Cen Sui Lan expressed hope that East Natuna’s Block P will contribute to Indonesia’s national oil and gas production targets, strengthen energy security, and boost local economic empowerment through sustainable use of natural resources.

If exploration in 2026 confirms new reserves, Natuna Island is set to become a strategic base for future exploration and production, thanks to its robust maritime and aviation infrastructure. (Prokopim/Patli)
