Natuna Regent Distributes Portable Fire Extinguishers to Midai Island, Strengthens Local Emergency Preparedness

On Tuesday afternoon (25/11), the Regent of Natuna distributed a number of portable fire extinguishers to the two districts on Midai Island. The handover event, held in the courtyard of the Midai Subdistrict Office, marked an important step in improving community preparedness for potential fire incidents in Natuna’s outer islands.

The equipment was symbolically handed over to the subdistrict heads of Midai and Suak Midai. The assistance is expected to strengthen early-stage fire response capacity at the subdistrict level, especially given the limited accessibility and long travel distances that often delay emergency handling in remote island areas.

During the event, the Regent also observed a demonstration by fire department officers on the proper use of portable extinguishers. The demonstration ensured that village officials, subdistrict staff, and local residents understand the basic techniques needed to respond quickly and effectively in the event of a fire.

In her remarks, Regent Cen Sui Lan reaffirmed the regional government’s commitment to enhancing public safety and protection. She emphasized that the distribution of portable extinguishers is an important initial effort to build preparedness while larger firefighting facilities continue to be developed.

She further revealed that the regional government has allocated funding for fire trucks for every subdistrict in Natuna, scheduled for procurement in 2026. This long-term initiative reflects the government’s commitment to improving rapid emergency response across the archipelago.

The subdistrict heads of Midai and Suak Midai expressed their appreciation for the government’s attention. They noted that the assistance is highly significant given Midai Island’s distance from central firefighting services, making portable extinguishers crucial for early fire suppression.

With this support, the government hopes to raise public awareness about fire mitigation and enable communities to take proper early action in emergency situations. Strengthening these safety measures is expected to lay the foundation for a safer, more responsive, and disaster-resilient Natuna. (Prokopim/Patli)
